Joe's Master's Thesis Pictures and Study Subjects

vole picture

Meadow vole (Microtus pennsylvanicus) covered with fluorescent powder in order to look at microhabitat use. The fluorescent powder falls off of the animal leaving a detailed trail of its movements. The powder "trail" can then be followed using a blacklight. This vole was photographed as it ate a flower petal on top of a plains pocket gopher (Geomys bursarius) mound. This was part of my Master's project which was completed in 1995.
